College Office Weekly Newsletter to Seniors: 9/30/24

Seniors,
   October is almost here! These next few weeks will be jam packed with both fun activities and getting us ready for application season!
 
This week in Senior Seminar, you will be working on your resume and cover letter with Melissa. With Amanda, you will use the first part of the class to finalize your college list and the second to begin the SUNY application. 
 
*Please continue filling out your tracker which should have your FINAL college list. 
 
What Seniors Should Be Focusing On This Week:
  • Finishing the "College Research" tab in your tracker with CUNY, SUNY, and/or private schools
  • Your College Essay in your ELA class
  • Resume and Cover Letter with Melissa
  • Attending their 1 on 1 with Amanda in 408
 
1 on 1's:
  • 1 on 1's will be continuing this week!
  • For your 1 on 1 meeting, you will need to have completed the "College Research" tab on your tracker. After our meeting, we will have your FINAL CUNY, SUNY, and private college, and trade school lists!
 
Senior Family Night:
  • The College Office is excited to announce Senior Family Night on Monday, October 7th from 6pm to 7:30pm. Please join to discuss in detail: Progress to Graduation, The College Application Process, Senior Activities, Timelines for Fall and Spring, as well as the beginnings of financial aid!
  • For the first time ever, we will have both an in person AND virtual option for the event! Amanda will be emailing families separately with more information and a sign up for the event! It is encouraged senior families and students join! 
 
Upcoming Trips:
 
FIT Trip with Amanda, Melissa, and Gerry on October 21st:
  • Seniors interested in design fields should join this FIT tour. This will be a general tour of FIT, where you will be able to learn about the school, the campus, majors, financial aid and the opportunities and organizations that FIT has to offer! Permission slips will be given directly to students who are interested in design programs during their 1 on 1 this week.
 
  • This will be our first big bus trip of the year! We will be leaving at 6:15am and will be visiting SUNY New Paltz and then SUNY Dutchess Community College before returning to Maker in the evening. SUNY New Paltz is most well known for their Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Social Sciences, and Business program. Dutchess Community College is a 2-year school that offers many certificate programs and programs you can find in a trade school. Some of their strongest programs are their Computer Information Systems program, Human Services, Education, Business, and Aviation programs, among others. Find the permission slip HERE.
Scholarship Opportunities:
  • CollegeXpress Scholarship is a no essay, randomized scholarship where you need to make an account to apply. Deadline: September 30th
  • Niche $25,000 Scholarship is a no essay, randomized scholarship that takes only a couple of minutes to apply. Deadline: September 30th
  • SP Scholarships is a scholarship program created to help students win scholarships without writing essays and filling out long paper applications. Deadline: September 30th
  • Be Bold Scholarship is $25,000, no-essay scholarship that will be awarded to the applicant with the boldest profile. Deadline: October 1st
  • Builders' Association Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who plans to study a construction-related program (construction management, engineering, or architecture). You will need to fill out their google form, and they will match you to 1 of their 27 scholarships if chosen. Deadline: October 31st
 
Deadline Reminders:
  • The CUNY Application will be free from October 21st to November 15th. We will be applying together in your Senior Seminar class. 
  • The SUNY Application is free from October 21st to November 3rd. We will also be completing this in class.
  • Early Decision and Early Action applications are due by November 1st at 11:59pm.
 
Announcements:
 
  • The Early Decision/Early Application clinic will be happening Monday and Tuesday of this week after school. 

  • If your family has not done so already, please complete and return the Class of 2025 Family Intake Form and return it to the College Office or email it to [email protected]. This form will allow the College Office to determine if a student is eligible for opportunity programs, scholarships, and will aid in helping to build a college list. This intake form along with your 2023 taxes are essential in completing financial aid applications. We strongly encourage every junior family to complete this form and have your child submit it to the College Office.

  • Students planning to apply to college through Early Decision or Early Action should let Amanda know ASAP. 
 
SAT News:

Maker will offer the SAT for free on Wednesday, October 23rd. All seniors are highly encouraged to re-take the SAT in October.
