Hello Maker Families!
As we wrap up the summer, we are excited to share that hundreds of Makers were staying busy this summer in Summer Youth Employment, college programs at FIT and the Cooper Union, traveling abroad, and passing classes and Regents in Summer School.
We are just a few days away from the first day of school on Thursday September 5th at 9 am! Students will report to their advisory classes on the first day.
We are so excited for a new year full of opportunities for creativity and joy!
Some important updates for this year:
- SCHEDULES: Correct schedules will be ready on Jumprope soon! We will send an announcement when they are ready to view.
- OUT LUNCH: All students will stay IN THE BUILDING for lunch on Thursday and Friday September 5th-6th. We will have pizza for 9th and 12th graders on Thursday and pizza for 10th and 11th graders on Friday. Lunch is also available in the cafeteria.
- Starting on Monday September 9th, students will need to have their Blue Emergency Contact Card and Out Lunch Permission Slip submitted to go out for the first marking period.
- Starting 2nd marking period, students must be ON TRACK TO GRADUATE to go out for lunch. This means passing all classes. Students who are not allowed out for lunch based on their report card grades will be offered tutoring at lunch and after school..
- CELL PHONES: Students will be expected to turn their phone in to each teacher at the beginning of every class. If students need phones for a class assignment, teachers will unlock them. Students who refuse to submit their phones or have continuous challenges with phone use in class will turn in phones to grade level admin for the day.
We are sad to say goodbye to some Maker staff, including AP Alex Sosa (see his note below!), but are excited to share that Seth Pearce will be stepping up as an Assistant Principal this year! We are thrilled to have him officially joining the Admin Team. He has shown his strengths as the Athletic Director and the 12th Grade Government & Economics teacher, but he is also a force in terms of operations, data, instruction and team building.

Dear Maker Students and Families,
I’m writing to share some news with you all that I’ve been excited and nervous about for a while. This was my last school year with UA Maker.
I started my career at Maker as the founding English teacher and it has been one of my greatest joys to be a part of this community for so many years. I remember being a founding teacher, when we were just a section of a hallway and staff could sit around one family table. It is joyful to think back on where we started as a school and the growth our Maker community has seen. This place far exceeds anything I could have imagined all those years ago.
Coming back was challenging and I often wondered if coming back this year was the right decision. When I look at the students and the relationships that I got to continue, new ones I got to start, even though it was tough, it was absolutely worth doing.
During this time, I worked with newcomer students at Maker. This work is challenging, exciting and something that has inspired me. It is with this newfound passion that I am opting to return to the classroom at a school in my neighborhood to work with MLL/ELL students.
While it is hard to say goodbye, I deeply trust the staff and school to always put students first. I take with me so many of the lessons learned at Maker - I am grateful for it all. Thank you for everything.
